Dr. Nicholas Charles Peter Miller, 1953-2015

Nick Miller

Nick passed away on 8th April 2015 with his family in the UK, after a courageous battle with ALS [Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often referred to as Motor Neurone Disease or Lou Gehrig's Disease].

Hong Kong was the place he considered 'Home', ironically the title of his last CD recording

Known to many in Hong Kong and overseas as an exceptional headmaster and educator and a gifted musician, Nick would often be seen at school graduation ceremonies and community days on stage with his Fender Stratocaster, strumming and singing his favourite genre of music - rock!

Having grown up in Hong Kong as part of a military family, for many years he was one of the English Schools foundation brightest stars having achieved deputy principal status at an early age, going on the to pioneer ESF Educational Services Limited, in between serving at both South Island and West Island Schools.

Nick then spent seven years in Brussels as head teacher of the senior school at St. John's Waterloo, before returning to Hong Kong in 2008 to become firstly supervisor and the principal of the YMCA Christian College, Tung Chung. He revolutionised the school and made it into what it is today, with four applications for every place and a first class track record in both public examinations and competitive sports.

Whilst in Hong Kong the Miller family resided in the Gold Coast area at Beaulieu Peninsular, was a member of HKGYCC and Nick could be regularly seen jogging along to Dolphin Square. He was a great friend to many in the area and of goldcoastonline.com

In 2012, Nick moved to Singapore to take up the challenge of principal to the Australian International Schools in Singapore, and achieved the same spectacular impact that he had ay YMCACC. In 2013 he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, also known as ALS.

He fought bravely and found his deep personal Christian faith a source of strength to him and his family.

His thanksgiving service at YMCACC on April 20th was well attended and a joyful occasion. The songs used were mainly ones that Nick had written and came from his latest CD, 'Home;

Nick is survived by his wife Alison, also a former ESF teacher in Hong Kong, their 4 children- Madelene, James, Katy and Peter and their recently born granddaughter Teya, who Nick got to see in the weeks before his death

A personal obituary from John Snelgrove, Siu Lam, Founding Pastor of the Vine Church Hong Kong

I feel as if a part of me has died, with the passing of the best friend any man could wish for. Nick Miller has been a major part of my, Sandra and our families' lives since 1987. We did just about everything together, in just about every location. Hong Kong, Macau, UK, France, Belgium - not forgetting Bali. We laughed together ( sometimes in the Spirit), cried together. Had our sweet moments ( We'll never forget seeing in the new Millennium together, with the party of all parties, an hour after leading worship in our dinner jackets at the APEX), we've had our tough moments. Deputy principal and great encourager to Paul and Matt and thousands of kids. Musician extraordinaire, we went to many concerts together and shared a great love of rock music, praise music - he played both at my 40th birthday party I remember.

We started Island Praise together, did Alpha together. He pioneered the move from RBBC to the Vine and encouraged Sandra and I to be part of what God was birthing. We had home group at Braemar Hill for many years and welcomed all and sundry, embracing the move of the Holy Spirit. We did thousands of eating meetings, Rugby 7's, boat trips on the National Mutual boat - we just did life together. We had holidays together and watched each others families grow up. It was great to have you back as a neighbour and be involved in the YMCA together and watch the amazing work you had done for SIS, ESF and St John's be repeated and a legacy left at YMCACC. It has been great to have had a glimpse of your life in Singapore and the work with AIS there.

I remember the sadness on first hearing about your illness. We have prayed thousands of prayers since , joining saints all around the world. We would ask God " Why Nick?' Yet we never ever heard you ask "Why me?" Instead, you and Alison have constantly given thanks and spoken words of life to each other. Your smile is etched on my heart. I remember my last visit with Matt and we were both touched by your disposition. The last three words you were able to say to me on FaceTime were "I love you'. I will never forget that!

Well my brother, I love you. Today you have no sickness, today you can sing and play guitar again. I bet you are singing 'Eagles Wings' which ministered so powerfully to Sandra when her mum died 20 years ago.

Alison we love you and our tributes to your amazing husband will be in what we do with the rest of our lives. Nick leaves a huge legacy and huge boots to fill, but by God's Grace we must press on

Nick 'One Day' we will meet again - Don't get anyone for backing vocals, keep my mike warm! Love you my great friend
